Lemon

Lemon juice is a natural way to lighten your hair. This method works best on blonde to light brown hair. For a hair lightening spray, dilute 2 tbsp lemon juice with 1 cup of water. Spray onto damp hair and comb to distribute evenly. Let the sun work in tandem with the lemon juice to gently lighten your hair.

Vitamin C Tablets

Similar to lemon juice, the acidic content of vitamin C tablets will also lighten hair. Crush a few tablets and add to your shampoo for an ultra-lifting treatment. Kim Kardashian had reportedly used this method on her hot pink hair to tame it to a gorgeous baby pink!

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is another great natural hair lightener. For this hack, steep 2-3 tea bags in hot water. Once cooled, use the tea to rinse your hair. Hold your head over a container to catch the tea and repeat to thoroughly dampen hair. Don a shower cap and leave for 15-30 minutes, then rinse out. Make concentrated tea and pour it into a spray bottle for an on-the-go lightening spray.

Salt

Salt opens the cuticles of your hair and lightens hair from the inside out. Dissolve a tbsp of salt in 1 cup of water and use as a spray. For the best results, use Epsom salt. Epsom salt is full of nutrient-rich minerals that nourish and repair your hair.

Vinegar

Vinegar is yet another acidic compound that can lighten hair color. As an added bonus, vinegar also detangles and defrizzes hair! Mix 1 cup apple cider vinegar with 5 cups water and use as a rinse. Leave on for 15-30 minutes, then shampoo and condition as usual.

Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide

Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide make a powerful hair lightening combination. Due to their strength, make sure you do a strand test before you apply the mixture throughout your hair.

For this hack, mix equal parts 3% hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to form a paste. The paste shouldn’t be too liquidy or too thick. Add more hydrogen peroxide or baking soda if needed. Section off your hair and apply. Wrap finished sections in aluminum foil to trap heat and help your hair process faster. Wait 30-60 minutes and rinse out your hair. Your hair will feel dry at first, so make sure you use a good leave-in conditioner.

Honey

Not only does honey lightens hair, but it also leaves hair luscious and shiny. Dissolve 2 tbsp honey in 1 cup of hot water. Let cool and use as a rinse. Leave on for at least an hour. You can also create your own DIY lightening conditioner by adding honey to it.

Cinnamon and Coconut Oil

Combine cinnamon and organic coconut oil for an overnight lightening hair mask. Apply the mask throughout your hair and cover with a shower cap (or plastic bag!). Wash and shampoo thoroughly in the morning for cinnamon-scented light locks!
