Exercise in the Morning
Mornings are the toughest time to get started on work, take it from a full-fledged night owl. Your eyelids are heavy as bricks and your brain’s literally still in bed. For a natural pick-me-up, do some light exercise in the morning. Jog or bike around your neighborhood for an instant flood of feel-good chemicals. Plus, the fresh air is sure to wake you up.
You’ve probably heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And it’s true. There are two main reasons people skip breakfast. They either have no time or they want to lose weight. The thing is, a nutritious breakfast smoothie can take 5 minutes to prepare and breakfast eaters have been known to weigh less than non-breakfast eaters. Eat a nutritious breakfast to power your brain and body for the day. Trust me, it’ll be worth it.
Fatigue and low concentration is a sign of poor hydration. Try to drink at least 8 cups of water every day (more if you’re exercising). A cold glass of water in the morning is preferable to coffee.
Clear Your Desk
Keep your desk organized and free of distractions to fully focus on the task at hand. Yes, that also means putting your phone away!
Keep Protein-Packed Snacks Nearby
Just as dehydration limits your thinking capabilities, hunger does the same. You can’t force a car to drive without fuel. Keep some healthy snacks on your table for when you need a boost.
Batch Similar Tasks
Combine like tasks and complete them in one go. This way, you’re staying ahead in terms of productivity because you’re not having to constantly set up new tasks. In addition, your brain is primed through the repetition of similar tasks, meaning you’re working faster than ever.
Listen to Music
Music has been shown to dramatically improve productivity in the workplace. However, if the task involves higher concentration, such as writing, choose instrumental music. Or just work in silence.
Write a To-Do List (and Stick to It!)
Write your to-do list the night before so you don’t take up precious downtime the next day. You should also include the estimated completion times next to your tasks. Try to be as accurate as possible. Don’t give yourself an hour for a menial task like checking your email and only 20 minutes for a writing project. Be realistic in your goals and always make sure to list important tasks first.
Work on Something. Anything.
If you find yourself stuck (or extremely unmotivated) to complete a certain task, do something else. This can be an easier or more mundane task but do something. Doing something, anything will help you get things done.
Just Do It
Newton’s first law states that an object in motion tends to stay in motion. An object at rest tends to stay at rest. The longer you put off doing something, the less likely you’re going to start. Just as you had started the task, the more likely you will continue and finish it!
